Thomas Cats

By Ellie Sophia / April 6, 2020

My Paw Print show traveled around the city to galleries and coffee shops for most of 2019 and into 2020.  One of the stops was Nine Lives Cat Cafe in Fountain square. I made a special show there, only featuring my feline work. At the time I had only worked with up to two cats at a time, but that soon would change. The Thomas family contacted me after they saw the show and asked if I could photograph two of their four cats. They assumed the other two would not cooperate. They were right about one of them, but with a little effort three of the four joined in.  One of my favorite images is of Murdock sticking his tongue out at Ura. That's kind of how the day went. A lot of people are in disbelief that I photograph cats, but the truth is they are some of my favorite subjects. The best images are always when a pet looks straight into the camera. That's always my ultimate goal and I have lots of tricks to accomplish this. Dogs often have a little trouble with this because staring at a stranger, in dog behavior, can be read as a challenge. Cats have no problem with this, in fact they often stare down the camera, creating some of the most intriguing images, don't you think?
